“After building strong families, the surest tactic for winning the culture war is plain: Give your kids a better education than their secularist peers.”
–Gene Edward Veith
The Jonathan Edwards Study Center is a part-time classical program for homeschoolers. The Study Center is a fully integrated, real-text approach to studying history, literature, grammar, writing, and rhetoric. Classical education can be demanding and time-consuming for students who learn at home. This once-a-week class gives students a time for meaningful instruction and discussion and equips them with detailed lesson plans for the entire week. The students will read a host of classical works and they will be given professional, personalized instruction in writing. This class finishes the year with a class production of a classic play. Students and parents find this class challenging, inspiring, and enjoyable.
This year the Study Center will cover Ancient History. Class objectives include understanding important events and key issues that shaped ancient history, understanding and appreciating how past events shape our world today, mastering the five-paragraph essay, reading and understanding the important literary works of the time, mastering high-school level English grammar, and expressing one’s ideas effectively through rhetoric. This class is recommended for grades 7-10. A placement test will be given to determine reading and writing levels.
Class meets on Wednesday mornings, 9:00 am - 11:00 am, during the regular school year. Students interact with the instructor and with classmates throughout the week via a class website.
The cost for the Study Center is $400 per semester. A discount is available for multiple students within the same family. Students need to purchase or borrow all the books on the reading lists. Most books are available at local libraries.
